Windows ships with a deep set of utilities that most people never open, and a small number of third-party tools genuinely fill the gaps. This hub organizes both by the job you are trying to finish.

Start with what is already installed

Before installing anything, check the utilities Microsoft already ships. CHKDSK, System File Checker, DISM, Disk Cleanup, Storage Sense, Optimize Drives, Windows Memory Diagnostic, Reliability Monitor, Event Viewer, Resource Monitor and Robocopy cover the majority of maintenance and repair work on a healthy PC.

Built-in tools have two advantages that third-party suites cannot match: they are supported by Microsoft, and they cannot bundle adware. Reach for an external utility only when a built-in tool has a real limitation.
